On an island at the edge of the Australian map, women from the East live quiet lives between shifts, waiting for the next time they gather. Through a poetic lens, the film moves between the island’s vast wilderness and the solitude and togetherness of lives adrift. In their calm days, a community takes shape, and a longing for home runs quietly beneath. Each of them is an island too, far from home and close to one another.

Walking through the Beijing hutongs where she shot her first film, actress Gong Zhe looks back on more than a decade in front of the camera. Moving between her debut, You and Me, and her new film, Island Keeper, she speaks of the turning point the new role brought, and of the kindred collaborators she has met along the way. In the summer light of the hutongs, the camera captures her warmth and sincerity against the everyday textures of old Beijing.

FITTING MODEL

A short observational documentary following a day in the life of a sample model at Sijiqing in Hangzhou, one of China’s largest wholesale clothing markets. Using close-range handheld following and concealed camera work, the film looks past the role to the person: the reality of the work, and what they hope for beyond it.
